ABOUT IMAGO RELATIONSHIP THERAPY

What is IRT?
This unique approach to therapy is focused on personal growth and healing through committed relationships and brings together the major psychological theories of the century. IRT proposes that there is an unconscious purpose (we call it imago) guiding us in our selection of a mate and our conduct of our relationships. The difficulties we experience arise from our lack of awareness about what we're doing in our relationships, not from our choice of partners.

IRT also teaches us:

  • How our early experiences of love with childhood caretakers have profoundly affected our patterns of perception and behavior in our current love life.
  • That we bring to our love relationships an unconscious agenda - to get some kind of love from our partner that we didn't get in our childhood so we can heal old wounds.
  • That frustration and struggle are a part of the development of a relationship, as we merge our "agendas" and attempt to get our needs met. In the process we often unconsciously rewound each other in ways we were wounded in childhood!
  • Helps us to develop important skills to resolve the pain and conflict in relationships so that they remain safe, growing and lasting!
  • Helps us to learn how to really love each other.

    IRT is for ...
    Couples who:

  • Are experiencing difficulties and want to resolve their conflicts.
  • Are just beginning a relationship.
  • Are considering divorce but want to find out if they can work things out.
  • Want to enrich their relationship.

    And Singles who want to:

  • Understand why past relationships didn't work.
  • Create satisfying and fulfilling relationships in the future.
  • Break destructive patterns.
  • Heal old hurts and frustrations.

What You Can Expect from IRT ...
When you come to your first session with you partner you will probably feel nervous or apprehensive, but you will soon be pleasantly surprised. Your imago therapist will explain the structure of therapy to you, which will include:

A commitment to a minimum of 10-12 sessions.

Homework assignments that are designed to help you become aware of and share valuable information with you partner.

Coaching and practice of communication process that will make it safe to share.

Learning skills that will help you resolve conflict and enhance joy together.

    Who developed IRT?
IRT was developed by psychologist Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. and his wife, Helen Hunt during the early 1980's. Dr. Hendrix wrote the best-selling books, Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples and Keeping the Love You Find: A Guide for Singles. Since the 80's Dr. Hendrix has established the Institute for Imago Relationship Therapy (IIRT) in Winter Park, Florida, which now has a faculty of 18 trainers around the world who contribute to the theory and practice of IRT and to the worldwide training of imago therapists.

    Who are Imago Therapists?
Only licensed and credentialed professionals, who have been through a yearlong training (over 96 hours) in IRT through the Institute, are qualified to call themselves Certified Imago Relationship Therapists.

How Imago has changed my life / how I believe it will change others:

Imago Therapy is an amazing new communication tool that, I believe, will be the therapy we use for years to come. When you think about it, we are evolved, and the most recent ‘evolution’ that we have had is the ability to experience emotion. It is what sets us apart from so many other species and beings. I believe that part of the brain is getting more and more advanced every day, and what Imago does is actually give us a vehicle to work through emotions in a safe and nurturing way.

Depression is the leading cause of suicide, and an estimate of 1 in 4 people will be affected by depression in their life through their own experience or with friends and family. And these numbers are just ‘reported’. My belief is that the reason for this depression is that we have repressed all of these feelings from childhood and found unproductive ways to escape them (addictions and escapes) – because we just do not know what to do with these feelings – and many times do not even know they are there.

Imago gives us that tool. It allows us to experience emotions in a healthy, safe environment. Imago has given me the opportunity to open up to my husband about issues that crop up in our relationship, issues that evoke similar emotions to those I experienced in childhood. I have also learned about things that have shaped him – and it is a tool that has allowed him to open up to me as well. It has enriched our relationship immensely.

Unfortunately, in childhood, we are taught ‘no’ and ‘don’t do that’ and ‘you don’t feel that way’ and ‘don’t cry’. And we all have feelings – we don’t have to be abused, neglected, etc. to experience them. And we are taught to suppress feelings from almost inception. Imago let’s us re-experience those feelings and navigate through them in a healthy way.

I am going to utilize the learnings of Imago in my nonprofit .... as I think it is a cutting edge therapy that will help many, many people and relationships for years to come.
