Sedona, AZ
Sedona, AZ

From the far-out to the apparently average, people of all stripes are deeply affected by Sedona's mysterious draw, known to many as "Red Rock Fever." It's a phenomenon so common that an entire industry has bloomed in Sedona catering to those who come here for healing, clarification. or inspiration.

Long before the intuitives, channelers and massage therapists took up residence, long before non-native settlers broke their backs tilling Sedona's rocky soil, people from all over the Southwest regarded Sedona as a special place, reserving certain canyons for sacred activities only.

What is it about this place that has touched so many souls for thousands of years? The explanations are as diverse as the people who come here. Many attribute Sedona's special draw to the "vortexes," specific points of energetic intensity among the red rocks that affect every living thing. Some look to native theology and folklore for an explanation. There are enough UFO stories around Sedona to give even the most staunch skeptic pause.

But it could be as simple as the stunning beauty that meets the eye at every turn here in Red Rock Country. The commanding landscape seldom fails to inspire a deeper connection and reverence for the earth and the universe in people who see it for the first, or the thousandth time.

Whatever your spiritual inclinations, you're almost sure to find something that resonates with you in Sedona, and plenty of people with whom to share it.

Ever since the early days of movies, when Hollywood has wanted to show the unique beauty of the West, it has gone to Sedona, a place that looks like nowhere else. Some hundred movies and TV shows have been filmed in and around town. We fell under Sedona's spell, too. The area's telegenic canyons, wind-shaped buttes and dramatic sandstone towers embody the rugged character of the West -- and the central place that Western character holds in our national identity. There's a timelessness about these ancient rocks that fires the imagination of all who encounter them. Some 11,000 years before film cameras discovered Sedona, American Indians settled the area. Homesteaders, artists and, most recently, New Age spiritualists have followed. Many cultures and agendas abound, but there's really only one attraction: the sheer, exuberant beauty of the place. People come for inspiration and renewal, tawny cliffs rising from the buff desert floor, wind singing through box canyons, and sunsets that seem to cause the ancient buttes and spires to glow from within. We hear the canyon's call and cannot resist.

Ojai, CA

A world away from the hustle and traffic that thwart much of Southern California is the small town of Ojai.   Ojai's name, taken from the Chumash Indian word A'hwai, meaning "moon," is a special place with a long history of reverence and appreciation for agriculture, the arts, education and the human spirit. The city is nestled within the Ojai Valley, a tiny sun-drenched, east-to-west laying valley 10 miles long and three miles wide that closely resembles the look and climate of either Tuscany or the south of France.

Charming communities are found throughout California, each with its own special qualities. But few reflect California's distinctively diverse, relaxed and friendly personality like Ojai.  One of Southern California's best small towns, Ojai is widely known for being an active art community, spa retreat and spiritual sanctuary, offering the services and amenities that make every visit a memorable experience. The community has long been known as a haven for artists, musicians and health enthusiasts.

A village—as the locals call it—of about 8,000, Ojai is a vibrant place with so much natural beauty that it gained fame decades ago when the area was photographed to represent Shangri-La in the 1939 movie, The Lost Horizon.  Nestled in the Ojai Valley, the town is surrounded by peaks that give off a glow in the evening light known as the pink moment.

The Ojai area has a wide variety of attractive locations ranging from the rugged mountains of Wheeler Gorge, the scenic Sespe River and the orange groves and many picturesque buildings of the Ojai Valley.  Filled with delightful shops, art galleries and a host of places to retreat from today's fast-paced lifestyle, Ojai invites you to walk its oak-shaded paths taking some time to drink in the serenity of it all.

Carpinteria State Beach is one of the scenic Central Coast beaches that shares the charm for which Santa Barbara is known. This Riviera style beach was chosen by the self-proclaimed beach expert, Dr. Beach, as one of the best beaches in the United States. The Florida International University's Stephen Leatherman uses 50 criteria in three categories to pick his places. Physical factors such as sand softness, wave size and current strength, biological factors such as water color and quality and presence of pests, and human use factors such as lifeguard protection, visual obstructions and amenities all factor into his equation. Carpinteria City Beach was the only California beach he chose.

Carpinteria State Beach is a mile-long beach with activities such as swimming, surf fishing and camping. A nearby Amtrak train stop makes and downtown shops make this a place you can park the car or get off the train and walk to nearly everything nearby. Seals and sea lions and an occasional gray whale may be spotted during the winter months where it actually can get a bit chilly, requiring coats. Carpinteria State Beach is wonderful, clean and offers unfettered views of the ocean sunsets. The park includes a visitors center, restroom facilities, campsites, RV hookups and more.

Nature smiles kindly on the Carpinteria Valley, where fruit trees blanket the hillsides, sandy beaches stretch in the sun, and daytime temperatures range between 60 and 80 degrees.
